“Former inmate in Fayoum prison spoke to the Middle East Times but expressed his fear of retribution for speaking to the media. He said he was imprisoned in the early 1990s for his involvement with extremist movements – groups he now denounces.
Security officers would treat him harshly.
“It was a horrible situation. I can’t go into details, because I am afraid of what would happen,” the former Islamist said. “But the people in charge of us would do things that are totally unacceptable under normal conditions. They took out their frustrations on us.”
The camps have been likened to the U.S. operated military prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in which inmates’ rights are not protected by the Geneva Conventions.
Their secrecy gives particular worries to human rights groups”.
