Inchiesta indipendente ed esterna

Colpo di reni della coscienza civile di Israele sull’Operazione Piombo Fuso a Gaza, tra il dicembre 2008 e il gennaio 2009. Dopo la pubblicazione delle testimonianze di decine di soldati che avevano partecipato all’attacco militare israeliano, raccolte da Breaking the Silence, alcuni dei migliori intellettuali del paese intervengono nella discussione, chiedendo all’establishment militare e politico di non liquidare quelle testimonianze. E, anzi, di far partire una inchiesta “indipendente ed esterna”. NOn si tratta della pressione incredibile che la società civile israeliana fece dopo il massacro di Sabra e Chatila, quando chiese una inchiesta su Ariel Sharon. E’ comunque un intervento importante, in un momento nel quale il campo pacifista israeliano sembra piegato e sempre più esiguo.

In questo caso, c’è stato l’intervento pubblico non solo dei due più importanti scrittori (Grossman e Oz), ma di altri letterati (Sami Michael, Orly Castel Blum, l’appena premiata Ronit Matalon), di accademici, di pensatori di alto livello. Penso in primis ad Avishai Margalit, il filosofo con il quale, nei caffè di Oxford, discuteva di Israele e Palestina Sari Nusseibeh, come racconta nel suo Once upon a country. A Palestinian Life. Margalit aveva scritto, assieme a Michael Walzer, un intervento molto critico sulla New York Times Review of Books, lo scorso maggio, proprio sulle nozioni e sulle differenze tra combattenti, non combattenti, civili, innocenti, guerra giusta.
Non c’è, tra le firme, quella di AB Yehoshua, che ha assunto una posizione diversa, molto più moderata, in un intervento pubblico.

We citizens of Israel coming from differing opinions and views, demand an independent and external Israeli investigation committee

for events of “Cast Lead”

Tens of testimonies from IDF soldiers that participated in “Cast Lead” were exposed recently by the organization Breaking the Silence and they show a bleak picture. From the words of the soldiers, it is clear that innocent civilians were harmed even when there was no danger to the lives of IDF soldiers, that the military used Phosphorous bombs on populated areas, that lenient open fire policies were implemented and that innocent civilians were used as “human shields.” The testimonies contradict the claims of Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Harel, who said after the release of IDF’s inconclusive findings: “we did not find a single event in which an Israeli soldier purposefully harmed innocent civilians.”

The gap between the official declarations and the picture exposed by soldiers’ testimonies requires a comprehensive investigation. We, citizens of the State of Israel, whose army is the IDF, demand to know the truth regarding the fighting carried out in our names, our money and at the price of danger to the lives of our loved ones. The military strength of Israel is meant to protect not just the lives of Israelis but also the Israeli way of life, of value to all parts of our society. We demand to know if the IDF protected Israelis in a manner becoming of the Israeli army.

Disrespect of lives of innocent civilians does not fit with the principles around which Israelis were raised: “foundations of freedom, justice and peace in light of the prophetic vision of Israel,” as stated in the Declaration of Independence.In light of the soldiers testimonies, the official stance of the IDF appears detached from reality. We can not accept this rash dismissal that pays no heed to the soldiers’ testimonies. Those who sent soldiers to combat are now obligated to relate with respect and thoughtfulness to their words.
