Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsoud, a lawyer for the Islamist opposition group, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that he was surprised to see his clients released, though he predicted the court’s decision. He noted that all of the Brotherhood members paid bail.
Some observers said that the timing of the release, coming before parliamentary elections, indicates that the Brotherhood and the government have struck a deal exchanging parliamentary seats guarantees that the Islamist group will not contest the presidency. A similar agreement was made before the 2005 parliamentary elections.
Ammar Ali Hassan, an expert in Islamist movements, said the release could be a goodwill gesture from the regime in an attempt to sabotage cooperation between the Brotherhood and other opposition parties.
