Il commento è stato scritto, non per caso, alla vigilia della visita di Barack Obama al Cairo, ed è una dura denuncia del regime di Hosni Mubarak. Mi ha colpito soprattutto un passo:
As President Obama prepares for his trip to Egypt this week, the Mubarak regime is facing unprecedented waves of social protest because life here has become intolerable for millions of Egyptians, who now have no choice but to take to the streets to proclaim their demand for a life fit for humans. Le coincidenze, nella vita, sorprendono sempre. Stamattina, poco prima di leggere il commento di Alaa al Aswany, avevo chattato con un conoscente egiziano, che mi rispondeva – riguardo alla visita di Obama – nello stesso modo. Sottolineando la presenza di due paesi e di un cesura sempre più profonda. E io “sto con le masse – e con i poveri”, aveva concluso.
