Let’s start, watching the Pacific Ocean and seeking inspiration. Jerusalem is very far away, from here. Will it be difficult to explain Jerusalemites’ life and pain, historical and political paths, bleak present and the need for recognition, justice, lasting peace? I guess and I hope not.

At this event, which is sponsored by the Forum for the Academy and the Public and will be moderated by Jeffrey Wasserstrom, the focus will be Paola Caridi’s new book, Jerusalem without God: Portrait of a Cruel City, which was just published by the American University in Cairo Press and draws on the Italian journalist’s long experience reporting on and living in the Middle East. UCI Historian Mark LeVine, who has written extensively on Jerusalem, will also join us to comment on and help place the book into historical perspective.

From her present home in Sicily, we are delighted to welcome journalist/author Paola Caridi. Between 2011 and 2012, she lived and worked in Cairo and Jerusalem. Author of an earlier book, Hamas: From Resistance to Government, she is here this evening with her new book, Jerusalem Without God: Portrait of a Cruel City (American University in Cairo Press). This is a look at Jerusalem beyond its historic mantle as holy city to the three Abrahamic religions, to divisions, barriers, and lines drawn by present-day governing forces, and to how daily life is lived in such a place, a city and its spaces shared but not shared.

How has the ongoing political conflict in Jerusalem changed the nature of the city? If a public square is the epitome par excellence of a public space, of the free circulation and relations among its citizens, then Jerusalem is no longer a city, a public space shared by all communities. Jerusalem is a city where the ongoing conflict has transformed the parameters of co-existence into closed social spaces where access is controlled and limited according to ethno-religious affiliations.
Is there a need for the international community to face the facts on the ground and change its paradigm for a stable and just solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? Is it at all possible, for the Holy City, to be once again the conflict’s laboratory? Can we envision a One and Shared Jerusalem?
