Tutto è successo a Or Yehuda, vicino a Tel Aviv. Copie del Nuovo Testamento (centinaia di copie) raccolte casa per casa e bruciate in piazza. Motivo: lottare contro i tentativi di evangelizzazione di missionari protestanti. Ecco il resoconto di uno dei più importanti quotidiani israeliani, Maariv:
“at the initiative of the deputy mayor representing the ultra-Orthodox Shas party (che fa parte della coalizione del governo Olmert), hundreds of copies of the New Testament were committed to the flames.
The event took place last Thursday in the plaza outside the Matslawi synagogue in the Neve Rabin neighborhood. Together with the deputy mayor, Attorney Uzi Aharon, hundreds of students from the ultra-Orthodox Michtav Eliyahu school, who danced around the burning books. Aharon said the burning was in response to “intensive Christian missionary activity” in Or Yehuda.
As part of this activity Ethiopian Jews in Or Yehuda were taken in buses to churches, and last week hundreds of New Testaments were distributed in Neve Rabin. Aharon said he decided to deal with the phenomenon in response to complaints which he received. He sent cars with loudspeakers round Neve Rabin, which is a secular neighborhood. “Dear residents. In these hours copies of the New Testament and pamphlets condemning Judaism have been distributed by missionaries.,” the loudspeakers bellowed. “Students of the school will go from house to house. You are requested to hand over the books so that they can be taken for destruction.” At the same time the students went from house to house collecting the books, which were all burned.
Aharon said the operation was a great success. “Residents of Or Yehuda are residents with values and an orientation to the Jewish religion and tradition,” he said. “They have all been taught to vomit from their midst those who were inciting them to change their religion. I think that members of the Knesset should amend the law on conversion, to prohibit, once and for all, the activity of the Christian missionaries, with their ample financial resources.”
