Ve lo ricordate Chris Patten? Oltre dodici anni fa traghettò Hong Kong dal Commonwealth alla Cina. E fu un buon traghettamento. Vidi Hong Kong per la prima (e ultima volta) proprio mentre lo handover era in corso, e tutto fu tranquillo. Ora Patten, dopo anni passati all’Unione Europea, è condirettore dell’International Crisis Group. Un analista, dunque. E il suo commento sul Financial Times di oggi ha tutto il gusto dell’analista che conosce molto bene i meccanismi e i dietro-le-quinte della politica. Oggetto: la nuova politica europea su Gerusalemme.

Last week, thanks to the energetic chairmanship of Sweden’s Carl Bildt, these ministers agreed a comprehensive statement of policy on Palestine and Israel. It was not quite as good as it should have been. Acting seemingly on instruction from Israel’s foreign ministry, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania fought to dilute the original text. But what survived was still pretty good.
