Siccome c’è bisogno di strategie diplomatiche più incisive, e talvolta i politici hanno le mani legate, allora ecco che può scendere in campo anche un milionario, in questo caso il britannico David Martin Abrahams, uno dei maggiori donor del partito laburista di Gordon Brown, ma soprattutto – in questo caso – di David Miliband. Abrahams è andato a Hebron, la palestinese Al Khalil, e ha incontrato quello che in sostanza è il leader di Hamas in Cisgiordania, Aziz Dweik, formalmente ancora speaker del Consiglio legislativo palestinese. A dedicare più che abbondante spazio alla notizia è il giornale conservatore israeliano Jerusalem Post.
Abrahams, a major donor to Britain’s Labor Party, told The Jerusalem Post he would urge Milliband to “consider the implications of Hamas’s positive overtures.”
During the meeting in Hebron, Dwaik stressed that other Hamas leaders, including Damascus-based leader Khaled Mashaal and Gaza Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, have voiced support for the idea of establishing an independent Palestinian state within the pre-1967 boundaries.
“The [Hamas] charter was drafted more than 20 years ago,” Dwaik noted, adding that his movement would even be prepared to “nullify” the document.
“No one wants to throw anyone into the sea,” he said.
Dwaik also expressed Hamas’s desire to engage in dialogue with the international community, first and foremost the European Union. He confirmed that Hamas was receiving financial aid from Iran, but said that this was the direct result of the boycott and sanctions against the movement.
Abrahams said that he would be happy to facilitate a dialogue between Hamas on the one hand, and Israel and the international community on the other. He said he was “very excited” to hear from the most prominent leader of Hamas in the West Bank that the movement would be prepared to nullify its charter and accept Israel.
Due considerazioni. La prima: non è la prima volta che leader di Hamas fanno affermazioni di questo tipo. E’ dal 2006 che le fanno: faccio autopromozione e cito le pagine e pagine dedicate sul mio libro sul movimento radicale palestinese a tutta la diatriba sul riconoscimento dello Stato di Israele. Seconda considerazione, di carattere diplomatico: la presenza di Abrahams è la conferma del grande e costante attivismo britannico. La politica estera di un paese non si inventa, ma si costruisce su solide basi. La Gran Bretagna, da queste parti, c’è sempre stata. Con alti e bassi, ma in maniera costante.
